I later found out that this pillar, along with three others, once stood around the base of the Clock Tower at the top of North Street.I was informed that there were two others lurking in bushes at the bottom of Roedean School. I'm not sure what happened to the fourth one or what happened to the one at the Open Market after demolition but here's some photos of three of them at least. Colour photos date 2017 and the black and white one from 2012.
Lloyds TSB decided to go it alone again as Lloyds. For a few days whilst they changed their signage back to ‘Lloyds’ the original ‘Capital and Counties Bank’ engraved sign was on show.
I am presuming that this was a guest house of some kind. I could only find it listed as Ivy House from c.1905.

Days are numbered for most of the buildings along Pelham Terrace, Lewes Road.
Demolition has started of the old Pink Coconut Night Club.
Built in 1933. Closed as a cinema in the late 1970s, it became a Bingo Hall. This closed in 1997.
